Rights Groups File Challenge To Targeted Killing By U.S. [09/06/10] "The American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) today filed a lawsuit challenging the government's asserted authority to carry out “targeted killings” of U.S. citizens located far from any armed conflict zone. The authority contemplated by the Obama administration is far broader than what the Constitution and international law allow, the groups charge. Outside of armed conflict, both the Constitution and international law prohibit targeted killing except as a last resort to protect against concrete, specific, and imminent threats of death or serious physical injury. An extrajudicial killing policy under which names are added to CIA and military “kill lists” through a secret executive process and stay there for months at a time is plainly not limited to imminent threats. “The United States cannot simply execute people, including its own citizens, anywhere in the world based on its own say-so,” said Vince Warren, Executive Director of CCR. “The law prohibits the government from killing without trial or conviction other than in the face of an imminent threat that leaves no time for deliberation or due process. That the government adds people to kill lists after a bureaucratic process and leaves them on the lists for months at a time flies in the face of the Constitution and international law.” [...]

"Tony Blair: Cheney’s vision ‘not stupid,’ possible ‘over time’" [09/06/10] "Vice-President Dick Cheney's vision of completely redrawing the map of the Middle East following the 9/11 attacks is "not stupid," and is "possible over time," former British Prime Minister Tony Blair says. In his new book, A Journey, the former Labour Party leader wrote that Cheney wanted a wholesale reorganization of the political map of the Middle East after 9/11. The vice president "would have worked through the whole lot, Iraq, Syria, Iran, dealing with all their surrogates in the course of it -- Hezbollah, Hamas, etc," Blair wrote. [...]"
Note: So part of the reason for 911 was to alter the Middle East situation ... and they're admitting that. The rest involves incredible amounts of money, drugs and weapons, and destroying the viability of the US as a county.

Op-Ed: "Our Long National Nightmare Isn't Over, It's Just Beginning" [09/06/10] "In the 1930s, the only thing we had to fear was fear, itself. Today, the main thing we have to fear is us, ourselves. Looking out over the horizon, I'm starting to wonder just how many shades of dark there are on the pallette. Lately, I get the feeling that we're about to find out. I wish I could say that this society did our best to fight our demons, but that the odds were simply insurmountable. You know. Like we were just sitting there by ourselves on our remote little Pacific island, a thousand years before telephones and radar when bang the tsunami hit, no fault of our own. And we bravely struggled heroically, doing our mightiest to save as many lives as we could. I mean, if you've got to crash and burn, better to go down with a little dignity and honor, eh? But, no, not for me, apparently. I'm an American. I live in a country nay, an empire! that insists on destroying itself. I'm part of the generation of decline. My people are the fools who perfected the fine art of committing suicide by stupidity. It's an astonishing act, and one of wide participation. The nightmare of the right in America edges increasingly close to dragging the country past the point of no return, over the cliff of violent implosion. At this point, there is already little that is missing save the jackboots and broken glass. [...]"

Note: Why this wouldn't fall under 'hate crime' legislation and be stopped is a mystery ... then again, perhaps not: A deliberately allowed provocation: Indonesian Muslims Protest Plans to Burn Quran "Thousands of Indonesian Muslims are rallying outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta to denounce a Florida church's plan to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11. The Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Fla., said it will burn the Islamic holy book on the ninth anniversary of the terror attacks. Local officials have denied a permit for the bonfire on the church's grounds. But the center, which made headlines last year by distributing T-shirts that said "Islam is of the Devil,'' insists it will go ahead with the plan. About 3,000 members of a hard-line Islamic group marched Saturday to the U.S. Embassy in downtown Jakarta, waving banners and posters condemning the plan. The group organized similar rallies in five other cities across Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation. [...]"
Commentary: Former Republican Congressional Committee Treasurer Pleads Guilty to Theft [09/06/10] "A former treasurer of the National Republican Congressional Committee pleaded guilty today in Washington federal district court to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the political committee and business clients. Christopher Ward, a Maryland resident, worked in the NRCC's accounting department before he became treasurer in 2003, according to court records. Ward, prosecutors said in court papers, also ran an accounting and consultant business that specialized in compliance with Federal Election Commission regulations. Prosecutors said Ward stole more than $844,000 from March 2001 to December 2007 by issuing unauthorized checks and wire transfers from the NRCC and political committees that were clients of his business. “Christopher J. Ward was trusted to oversee other people’s money, and he violated that trust by diverting nearly $850,000 into his own pocket and creating fraudulent documentation to conceal the theft,” U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein of Maryland said in a statement. “Mr. Ward then caused false reports to be filed with the Federal Election Commission concerning the expenditure of the political contributions.” [...]"

Major NH National Guard Deployment Announced [09/06/10] "Army officials said 750 soldiers from the New Hampshire Army National Guard will be heading to Kuwait as part of Operation New Dawn. Maj. Gen. William N. Reddel III announced the deployment Thursday morning. It is the largest deployment of National Guard forces from New Hampshire since World War II. Col. Peter L. Corey is the commander of the 197th Fires Brigade, which will be going to Kuwait primarily to help secure supply lines. Corey said their mission is that of a security force. The unit has been preparing for the deployment for about 18 months. They will leave for Fort McCoy for further training on Sept. 11. Mistresses, Wives Clash Over Chilean Miners [09/05/10] "If those 33 trapped Chilean miners make it to the surface safely, some of them may end up wishing they'd stayed underground. Officials at the camp where families have gathered say at least five miners' wives have encountered surprise mistresses. Ugly scenes have ensued as women clash over compensation packages, the Telegraph reports. One miner has a first wife he never divorced, a live-in partner, a mother of a child he had several years ago, and a woman who says she is his current girlfriend. All are holding vigil at the camp. "It's a logistical nightmare trying to keep them apart—and of course they all want to send messages," said a Red Cross worker. Officials are considering asking the miners whom they would like to claim the compensation, although they are trying to avoid raising the men's stress levels by letting them know too much about the dramas happening above ground. Mexico Drug Kingpin Admits U.S. Funding [09/04/10] "A captured Mexican drug kingpin admitted to “investments” in Colombia and said he had received trailers full of dollars from the United States, in a first interrogation video released here. US-born Edgar Valdez, alias “the Barbie” for his fair complexion, was captured this week, in a major coup for the Mexican government as it struggles to contain raging drug violence. Valdez, 37, was a key lieutenant of Arturo Beltran-Leyva, who headed the Beltran-Leyva cartel and was Mexico’s third most wanted man until his December 2009 death in a military operation. Mexican justice officials on Wednesday interrogated “the Barbie” and were set to decide whether he would be sent to the United States, where he has been indicted in several drug trafficking cases. US and Mexican officials both offered some two million dollars for information leading to his arrest. The broad-faced drug trafficker wiped sweat off his face as he replied to questions from a female voice in images released by the attorney general’s office late Tuesday. He said his networks extended to Colombia and he received payments from the United States in dollars hidden in vehicle trailers. [...]"

Commentary: Middle East Loses Trillions As U.S. Strikes Record Arms Deals [09/04/10]
"The Internet has provided the world with, if nothing else, instantaneous access to news and in-depth information previously available only to governments and think tanks. It has also allowed for the exchange of data and analyses between groups and individuals around the globe, in part by making one tongue, English, the language of the World Wide Web. It remains to be seen whether the keystroke is mightier than the sword. An illustrative case in point is an August 29 report from China's Xinhua News Agency on a news article by Egypt's Middle East News Agency regarding a study conducted by the Strategic Foresight Group in India. The latter, a report published in a book entitled The Cost of Conflict in the Middle East, calculates that conflict in the area over the last 20 years has cost the nations and people of the region 12 trillion U.S. dollars. [...] Other sources estimate the overall rate of unemployment in the Middle East at 20-25 percent, with joblessness in nations like Lebanon and Yemen at 30 percent or more. This despite the fact that the region has achieved one of the more impressive successes in improving educational opportunities, measured by the amount of years students spend in school, in the world. The Middle East requires comprehensive regional development, but instead is receiving billions of dollars worth of arms. The area's nations could be spending that sum on rural and urban infrastructure, dams and reservoirs, desalination and irrigation, forestation and fisheries, industry and agriculture, medicine and public health, housing and information technology, equitable integration of cities and villages, and repairing the ravages of past wars rather than on U.S. warplanes, attack helicopters and interceptor missiles. Scientist, 70, Sets Off Airport Fiasco [09/03/10] "Officials decided to shut down much of Miami International Airport after a database showed a scientist with a suspicious item in his luggage had once been charged with illegally transporting bubonic plague, a senior law enforcement official said Friday. No dangerous material was found on 70-year-old Thomas Butler after he was detained Thursday night, the official told The Associated Press on Friday. Butler who was acquitted on charges of transporting the potentially deadly germ in 2003, cooperated fully after he arrived on a flight from the Middle East, said the official, who requested anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the information. Most of the airport was shut down Thursday night after officials found a suspicious metal canister in Butler's luggage. A Homeland Security spokesman said at first it looked like a pipe bomb, but no explosives were found. The senior law enforcement official said a Transportation Security Administration inspector noticed an odd container as Butler was going through Customs after arriving on a flight from the Middle East, where he had been teaching at a Saudi Arabian university. The inspector ran Butler's name through a database and discovered that he had been tried on the plague charges in 2003. Officials decided to evacuate the airport and detain Butler. Tests showed that the container and his other belongings did not contain any hazardous biological material or explosives. He was released Friday morning. No one answered the door at an address in Lubbock, Texas, listed as his on a U.S. Department of Commerce website. [...] Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor who represented Butler during his appeals, said Friday that the Miami incident "appears to be a fantastic overreaction," probably resulting from a computer flagging Butler's court record. "That's ironic because we defeated all the national security counts in the case," Turley said. "The only plague claim he was convicted of was a highly technical paper violation; he literally checked the wrong box on the form." He added: "I find it strange to evacuate an airport because a guy was convicted of contractual violations with a university." [...] " Police Release Scientist in Miami Airport Scare
Ex-MI6 man sentenced over leaks [09/03/10] "A former MI6 worker is given a 12-month jail sentence for trying to sell top secret material for £2m. Houghton, who worked as a £23,000-a-year software engineer, had tried to sell copies of electronic files containing details of information-gathering software and staff lists to the agents in The Netherlands. The Dutch authorities then tipped off MI5. Judge Mr Justice Bean heard Houghton's account was that he was "directed by voices to do what he is said to have done in the charges". Mr Justice Bean said he did not know if his claims were true but described him as a "strange young man". He added: "If the material had found its way into the hands of a hostile power it would have done enormous damage and put lives at risk." Agents from The Netherlands are understood to have bugged and filmed Houghton as he displayed the files and offered to provide them with lists of MI5 agents he had worked with. The price was negotiated down to £900,000 and immediately after Houghton handed over the files on 1 March he was arrested while carrying a suitcase containing the cash. British Attorney General moves toward re-opening investigation into mysterious death of Iraq weapons inspector [09/03/10] "The United Kingdom’s top law enforcement official has taken possession of secret files surrounding the death of a prominent WMD researcher who was found dead in the months after the invasion of Iraq. David Kelly, once employed by the British Defense Ministry, was a former UN weapons inspector who had been previously deployed to Iraq. He was found dead in July 2003 about a mile from his home, having ingested more than two dozen pain-killers and with a cut in his left wrist. A “Blue Ribbon” inquiry ruled the death a suicide, but skeptics — including several prominent doctors and coroners — challenged the inquiry’s conclusion. They said Kelly could not have taken his own life through such a small cut. Others noted that Kelly had been in touch with BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan that month about Britain’s dossier on Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction. He’d also emailed then-New York Times reporter Judith Miller the day before he was found dead. Miller was instrumental to selling the war in the United States, as one of the Times’ top reporters on WMDs. Some elements of Miller’s reporting later turned out to be patently false. According to Thursday’s Daily Mail, UK Attorney General Dominic Grieve has assumed possession of “secret files which could trigger an inquest into the death of Dr David Kelly.” “For the first time,” the Mail reports, “Mr Grieve is actively seeking the evidence required to hold a new inquiry into the weapons inspector’s death.” [...]"

AZ: Lobbyists Tie Brewer Administration To Private Prisons [09/02/10] "Gov. Jan Brewer took center stage last Tuesday night after she officially clenched the Republican nomination. Standing just behind her was a man most Arizonans would not recognize. He’s Chuck Coughlin, Brewer’s campaign chairman, policy adviser and a lobbyist for the largest private prison company in the country. And he’s one of two people in the Brewer administration with ties to Corrections Corporation of America. The other administration member is communications director Paul Senseman, a former CCA lobbyist. His wife still lobbies for the company. According to campaign finance records, CCA executives and employees contributed more than $1,000 to the governor’s re-election campaign. The company’s political action committee and its lobbyists contributed another $60,000 to Brewer’s top legislative priority, Proposition 100, a sales tax to help avoid budget cuts to education. Caroline Isaacs from the American Friends Service Committee, which advocates for social justice issues, said the money is evidence of influence the company has on the governor. Isaacs said private prison companies have been buying influence in Arizona politics for years. The number of private prisons and jails operating across the state shows the result of that influence, he said. Commentary: "The Greatest Covert Operation Ever: The Politics of Terror as the Business of Terror" [09/01/10] "The politics of terror are the greatest covert operation ever. In explaining why, I’ll begin by defining some terms, because, when discussing the covert op called “the politics of terror,” words and their management are all important. How are politics and terror actually defined: how are these meanings manipulated; for what purposes, and by whom? Terrorism is defined as "violence against civilians intended to obtain a political purpose." This is an ambiguous phrase, which begs the questions: what are politics and violence? Politics is defined as “the process by which groups of people make collective decisions.” And violence is the use of force to compel a person or group to do or think something against their will. That includes the violence of words – of threatening to hurt - and of social structures, as well as the violence of deeds. So, by definition, terrorism is political violence – hurting people, or threatening to hurt them, in order to make them govern themselves against their will. In America , terrorism is always condemned by the government, and, accordingly, America is never a perpetrator of terrorism, but always the victims of it. The US war on terror is the ultimate expression of this principle: it is a military response to terrorism; violence in self-defense, not (ostensibly) violence for a political purpose. That’s the official story – the assumption. But I’m going to show that America does engage in terrorism – violence against civilians for political purposes. This “state” terrorism, however, is covert, in so far as it is equated with national security, and thanks to that built-in ambiguity, it has both stated and unstated purpose. [...]"

Insurance premiums could be raised, military exchanges and commissaries could be shut down, and other services could be eliminated. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who wants military services to slash $100 billion in overhead over the next five years, previously said he would attempt to protect jobs and benefits like college tuition, child care, and housing—but has more recently indicated that nothing is off the table when it comes to potential cuts.
